This month launches a new series of top issues our participants discuss in their leadership classes with us.  At any given time, we may have 50 to 70 active participants, so rest assured, we have a good pulse on current challenges!   This month, we are talking about one of the most challenging skills to learn – The Art of Delegation. 

2023?  How did we do?  During these last couple of weeks, we can’t help but look back at our goals and see what we accomplished.  If you are like a lot of people, you may feel a little discouraged and want to renew your subscription to the “Should Have, Would Have, Could Have Club”.  Instead of feeling dissatisfied, maybe we can shift that feeling to a sense of gratitude and even accomplishment. 

During the holidays, we plan special treats for our teams to show our thanks for everything they have done for us during the year.  While these are always appreciated, there are a couple of meaningful ways to express our thanks throughout the year.   

Establishing and maintaining a healthy work environment is one of the most sincere and impactful “thanks” you can give as a leader.

In a recent leadership class, we discussed giving feedback. It turns out that this skill is one of those things that we think we do well, until we honestly evaluate how we do it, and the results that we get. Every leader in our class was able to identify with at least one (or more) of the pitfalls above. This just highlights the need for leaders to continue to improve their feedback skills to reinforce the attitudes and habits that lead to successful performance.

(VUCA stands for Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, Ambiguity).

Effective delegation is the act of giving someone else the responsibility and authority to carry out an assignment or to represent you or your organization in a specific role. Conducted skillfully, delegation is one of the most powerful actions a leader can do to improve organizational performance. Through delegation, a leader can free up time for high payoff activities and develop employees for future advancement. But there is an equally important third benefit that is not as well-known.
