March Madness reminds us of something we often forget in our day-to-day work: when the pressure is on, no one rises to the occasion, they fall back on their preparation.
Lisa Hayes (Director of Strategic Development and Leadership Growth) has recently been supporting clients with improving their communication and presentation skills. Here are some highlights that we think you might enjoy:
A Few Strategic Points
This isn’t just about presenting. It’s about how we show up… every day.
Because every time you speak, whether in a meeting, a one-on-one, or a high-stakes conversation, you are taking people somewhere.
The question is… are you guiding them there with intention?
1. Start With the Destination
Before you say a word, ask:
What do I want people to know, decide, or do?
Without a clear destination, messages drift, meetings run long, and outcomes fall short.
When the destination is clear, everything else gets easier and anything that doesn’t move people forward becomes noise.
2. Keep It Simple
Strong communication doesn’t require more content, it requires more clarity.
Focus on:
- An impactful opening
- 2–3 key points
- A clear close
Your goal isn’t to say everything, it’s to guide people to what matters most.
3. Practice Out Loud
This is where most professionals fall short.
Thinking it through is not the same as practicing it.
When you practice out loud:
- You catch what’s unclear
- You eliminate detours
- You build real confidence
As Lisa shared, “If you don’t say it out loud, you’re not practicing, you’re imagining.”
4. Confidence Is Built, Not Given
Most people feel nervous before speaking. That’s normal.
What reduces nerves? Preparation.
What builds confidence? Repetition.
Just like Peter shared, practice, when done consistently and intentionally, becomes habit. And habits are what show up when it matters most.
Take Action This Week
✔ Define your destination before you speak
✔ Simplify to 2–3 key points
✔ Practice out loud at least once
✔ Reflect and improve
Because when the pressure shows up…
You won’t rise to the occasion.
You’ll rely on what you’ve practiced.
